Ambulances leave a complex near the site of a suspected Indian missile attack in Muridke, a town in the Pakistani province of Punjab, on May 7, 2025.

Here's what's happening

• Deadly missile strike: India said its “Operation Sindoor” hit “terror infrastructure” in both Pakistan and Pakistani-administered Kashmir, a major escalation that has pushed the rival neighbors to the brink of a wider conflict. According to Reuters, the Pakistani military said at least 26 civilians were killed in the attack.

• Planes shot down: Pakistan said it shot down five Indian Air Force jets and a drone. India has not confirmed fighter jet losses. Pakistani defense sources said three of the five planes shot down were Rafale fighter jets, valuable assets of the Indian Air Force purchased from a French manufacturer.

• Tourist massacre: The escalation came on Wednesday after gunmen massacred more than two dozen civilians, mostly tourists, in Indian-controlled Kashmir last month. India accused Pakistan of involvement, a charge Islamabad denied.

• Kashmir dispute: Hindu-majority India and Muslim-majority Pakistan both control parts of Kashmir but claim it in full and have fought three wars over the territory.
